  • 4 wheelchair-friendly destinations perfect for an adventure

The assurance that the destination you’re heading for is completely wheelchair friendly can be a huge weight off your shoulders and can minimise the anxiety of travelling somewhere that you haven’t visited yet. Fortunately, many of the world’s most amazing destinations are completely wheelchair accessible, making disabled travellers’ adventures all the more enjoyable. Read on to find out about our favourite wheelchair-friendly holiday destinations.

    Alaska

First on our list is the beautiful American state of Alaska. This remote and rugged landscape would, at first glance, probably not seem like the type of destination to be all that wheelchair-friendly… In saying this, however, we are happy to announce that there are tons of sights, activities and entertainment to make the most of, all of which has appropriate wheelchair access and disability assistance.

    The Lake District

If you enjoy calm and peaceful days taking in the fresh country air and birdwatching by a beautiful lake, then this could be the perfect trip for you. The Lake District is a breath-taking and tranquil place with some of the best views in the world. You can take a picnic and sit by the lake all day, or go exploring in some of the region’s many castles and caves. If that’s not enough for you, the town is full of hidden gems in the form of pubs, restaurants and other entertainment. Get some reliable mobility scooter/powerchair transportation and take a trip to The Lake District today.

    Barcelona

Barcelona is the largest city in Catalonia and the second-largest city in Spain. The city boasts an amazing collection of tourist attractions and famous spots to visit, all wheelchair accessible and within 10 minutes of public transport. Barcelona is the perfect city break for a long weekend getaway!

Running through the heart of the city is the popular boulevard Las Ramblas; the street is completely flat, making seeing the sights a breeze for wheelchair users. Disabled visitors can also skip the queue at many of Barcelona’s famous attractions such as the prestigious Sagrada Familia. If you’re hoping to soak up the sun whilst you’re visiting the city, take yourself to one of Barcelona’s many beautiful beaches. Don’t forget the sun cream!

    Amsterdam

Fondly referred to as ‘The Dam’ by its many fans, Amsterdam is a gem of a destination for exploring in a wheelchair. Like Barcelona, many of the public spaces were built specifically with wheelchair access in mind. With pavements and historic cobbled streets, lined with everything from souvenir shops to tasty eateries – and many, many coffee shops – there really is something for everyone in Amsterdam.

Why not try one of the numerous museums this city has to offer, such as the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum? Or, if you like a good scare, we recommend the Amsterdam Dungeons, where talented live actors will take you through the city’s history – and give you a fright in the process. This city certainly has made great efforts to provide easy exploring for all, from accessible boat tours to bicycle tours designed especially to accommodate disabled visitors.
